Businesses today are turning to mobile app development as well as e-commerce as the market shifts to online shopping and mobile transactions. Worth to mention also is the seemingly endless “boom” of the IT-BPO industry creating innumerable employment opportunities, and more tech-related jobs in particular.

No wonder in the recent years, career opportunities related to information technology were in constant demand. With local and foreign businesses including the government keeping up with the tech evolution, the need for IT jobs in the Philippines continuously rise.

According to the Monster Employment Index, a gauge of online job posting activity compiled by Monster.com, the Philippines is set for future growth in the IT, Telecom/ISP and BPO/ITES sector having a quarterly growth of 6%. This makes the sector one of the highest performers in online hiring demand. The IT, Telecom/ISP industries have also shown the highest annual growth since June 2016 in August with a 17% increase year-on-year based on their Q3 report.

Just recently, online professional networking site LinkedIn released their 2019 list of Emerging Jobs in the Philippines, the top and most of which requiring knowledge in tech. After analysis of millions of user-input job titles from the last five years, the top five are as follows:

  1. Data Scientist
  2. Application Development Analyst
  3. Back End Developer
  4. Full Stack Engineer
  5. Sales Development Representative

LinkedIn Vice-President of Talent and Learning Solutions for the Asia-Pacific Feon Ang said that soft skills in communication and management are just as important as digital competency resulting to the need for hybrid skillsets. In the BPO industry, digital skills such as data analytics, cyber security, blockchain, digital commerce, and fintech are sought after.

LinkedIn also mentioned that despite the high demand for digitally-skilled employees, the number of qualified workers is low. It is recommended that companies help upskill their workers through trainings.

Last year, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the government entity mandated to develop and promote the national ICT development agenda, celebrated its 10th year with themes of inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainability. This aims to intensify efforts in bridging the digital divide by reaching and including marginalized sectors. Part of their campaign was also to conduct trainings around the country in efforts to upskill and reskill the workforce.

If you’re wondering what the scene is like outside the Philippines, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said in 2018 that IT professionals were also in demand abroad along with nurses, land-based and sea-based engineers, and teachers. In the Asia-Pacific region, IT jobs are being offered a salary of at least P60,000/month.

The IT industry in the Philippines never ceased to look promising with all the opportunities that lay ahead. As local and foreign businesses explore and expand and with the government getting more involved, IT-related careers is showing more potential than ever.
