5 Pieces of Career Advice That Fresh Grads Don’t Usually Hear

Graduation season is on and if you’re one of the fresh grads trying to make your way into the workforce, you’ve come to the right place.

Starting off with the good news – you’re very fortunate to be looking for a job at this day and age. It’s a candidate-driven job market out there which means there are more opportunities for job seekers and you may have the chance to get higher salaries, incentives, benefits and more favorable arrangements.

Not to mention all these convenience and accessibility in the job search brought about by the digital age. Gone are the days that you browse broadsheets’ classified ads to look for job openings, cluelessly draft a résumé and walk-in to companies leaving them off to guards just to wait for a call that may never come. Fresh graduates today will get all sorts of tips and advices enough to land themselves a job in no time.

Here are a few tips that might be unheard of but nevertheless true:

Feel free to take a break.

Many new graduates are too excited trying to look for a job a couple of days after their graduation. Some might really have to rush to find work because they’ve got bills to pay – and that’s totally understandable. However, if you have the luxury of time, take a break.

A few weeks, or even a two-month hiatus can be beneficial. Go on a vacation, have fun and reflect. With this, you can get to know yourself more with real, day-to-day experiences that may help you determine your interests and passion more. You will find this extremely useful in your job search.

Know where you want to start.

At this moment, you don’t have to know everything about how your career is likely to pan out. But at least know where and how you want to start. Do you want a job that gets your mind working? Do you want to travel? Do you want to serve communities? What factors do you consider will make you stay in an organization?

Consider your values and keep them in mind when looking for a job because they’re the ones that will get you where you need to be.

Take your resume seriously.

Many fresh graduates take this for granted. Most of the time, your résumé is the one and only basis for employers to give you the light of day. It’s all or nothing.

Make sure your résumé is concise and accurate. As a fresh grad, you might have little to no professional experience which can be a challenge when competing with more experienced candidates. That’s why it is important to highlight all your achievements and detail how you were able to be successful in your initiatives.

Believe in yourself, but be humble.

You should be confident enough when looking for a job. Believe in your capabilities as an individual but never be arrogant. It’s not the time to demand unreasonable compensation. As a fresh graduate, you still have countless things to learn. Show them that you are open to knowledge and opportunities while being skillful and competent.

Consider a workplace and culture that is fit for you.

The work culture and environment is just as important as the job itself. According to LinkedIn, “The #1 obstacle candidates experience when searching for a job is not knowing what it’s like to work at an organization.” No matter how great the job or salary is, if the work environment is not right for you, chances are you won’t stay for long. A company’s work culture can determine what kind of relationship you will have with your colleagues and superiors. See how the company’s values match your own and how they can be instrumental to your own progress.
